PROGRAM: A public aquatic center for Ithaca, NY. Required lockers, a snack shop, one indoor, and one outdoor pool.

SITE: A piece of reclaimed land that currently serves as Cornell University’s marina on Cayuga Lake.

CONCEPTS: The form, organization and structure of this project are driven by site analysis and character. The nature of the site as a man made piece of land that is oddly situated on the otherwise continuous lake shore was explored in a series of site models in a large tank of water. The models tested concepts of layered site structure, erosion, water pressure, human intervention, and dynamics of a lake edge over time. The structure itself developed out of the site model as something that could stabilize the site pressures, and locate itself according to both natural and man-made areas of erosion. Dynamics that were evident in the site model influenced a structural system that illustrates how the site has changed and will change over time. This is done by highlighting structurally tensions and compressions related to similar conditions in the site. Experientially the users follow a sequence from solid geology to the more tenuous lake edge through a series of spatial and structural configurations.
